Golden Rule

NEVER STOP INSULIN

Even if you are not eating, your body needs insulin to stop ketones.

Action Plan

  • Check BG: Every 2 hours (day and night).
  • Check Ketones: Every time you pee or every 2 hours.
  • Hydration: Drink sugar-free fluids (water/tea) if BG is high. Drink sugary fluids (Lucozade/juice) if BG is low.
  • Food: Try to eat small amounts of carbs (toast, soup, crackers) often.

When to call 999 / ER

  • Vomiting and unable to keep fluids down.
  • Ketones are consistently high (>1.5) despite insulin.
  • Deep, rapid breathing or fruity breath.
  • Exhaustion or confusion.
  • Unsure what to do.
